Among KeyShot 10’s new Smart Export additions is a new 3D printing format that allows you to export 3MF files directly from KeyShot. Here, we’ll learn how to export 3MF files from KeyShot to significantly speed up your prototyping process.
3D Printing With 3MF
Also known as 3D manufacturing format, 3MF is a better alternative to the traditional STL format, allowing you to not only export a 3D printable file, but one that contains data such as dimensions, colors, textures, materials, and mesh information. This allows you to export colored and texturized files that are ready for full color 3D printing. Let’s take a look at how to do it.
When implementing 3MF into prototyping workflows, designers can easily and quickly prototype in-house with 3MF compatible printers, such as the J55 from Stratasys.
Export to 3MF
Exporting 3MF format files from KeyShot is just as easy as exporting any other format type. Simply select File…, Export… and Export to 3MF. After choosing where to save your file, the 3MF Export window will appear.
Adjust 3MF Settings
At the top of this window under Size, you’ll see the current file’s dimensions and units of measurement. If you have not already specified your units of measurement, you can do so from here. Below this, you also have options to set the Texture resolution in dpi and adjust the Number of samples using the slider.
Results tend to appear best when using a DPI between 400-600, which becomes more apparent when working with textures and labels.
Since parts need to be exported with either Geometry Nodes or Textures, you can select Prefer Geometry Nodes or Prefer Textures, depending on which you would like to prioritize. Once your preferences are set, go ahead and hit the export button to bake and export your 3MF file.
Create transparencies using Plastic, Glass, Gem, or Liquid materials, instead of using a translucent medium and scattering medium.
If you’re interested in quickly moving from rendered KeyShot image to full CMF prototype, this is an invaluable tool that can greatly reduce the time required to take you from concept to market, and put prototypes in your hands faster.
