KeyVR is a revolutionary, new virtual reality experience to put creators and products in the same room – with one click.
Tustin, California, May 7th, 2019 – Luxion, a leading developer of advanced rendering and lighting technology, including the first real-time ray tracing and global illumination program for 3D rendering and animation, today announced KeyVR, a completely new One-Click VRTM experience from the makers of KeyShot®.
With KeyVR, users are able to create immersive, fully interactive virtual reality experiences quickly, with one-click from any KeyShot scene. They are able to do it without any scripting, coding or specialized model preparation – Once the scene is in KeyShot, they are ready for VR. Through this ability, engineers, designers and 3D professionals are able to assess designs faster, explore the detail and functionality of products more deeply, and allow customers to experience current products, or future products, in the environment of their choice.
The hype built around VR and the expectations going along with it have created a solution in search of a problem. Many customers experiment with VR without incorporating it into their decision making or considering the application in the product development process. As Luxion has done with KeyShot, a designer-first approach was taken to craft a solution that truly address the challenges seen in product development. Designers and engineers need VR to augment their existing visualization workflow without adding overhead. They want to see issues before products are manufactured, bring context to their ideas, and experience real-world lighting conditions from a human perspective. And, they want to do it fast. This is KeyVR – the VR solution that integrates seamlessly into existing workflows to help 3D professionals view scenes in virtual reality quickly to solve design challenges and present ideas.
“It was amazing to be able to stand in my HP 3D printing vision of the future factory!” – Bart Massee, Advanced Design, HP Design Vancouver Washington
A New Development. A Complimentary Product.
KeyShot uses real-time ray tracing with the goal of producing production-ready visuals quickly, at the highest fidelity needed for the deliverable. KeyVR is built upon the core framework of the KeyShot application as a native VR solution for full-frame, interactive, virtual world experiences. Through this relationship, KeyVR perfectly complements KeyShot as a visualization solution that assists designers in exploring their design intent while maintaining that visual quality in a product anyone can use.
“VR prototypes have been around for decades, and although VR hardware is finally here, the industry feels very young in terms of software for content creation,” explains Jesper Mosegaard, Director of Products at Luxion. “I’m looking to change that. With the team at Luxion, I want to push the technology into the mainstream. KeyVR allows product developers to connect to their product with great intimacy and to directly experience them very early in the design process.”
“We are primarily using KeyVR to analyze scale and form of early concept designs for our fitness equipment,” said Paul Taylor from Life Fitness, a KeyVR Early Access customer. “We typically don’t get a good sense of scale until we build a full-scale foam model. By that time, we have limited ability to make changes. With KeyVR we can experience the design much earlier in the process to get a better idea of the finished product in time to make critical changes. We have been able to seamlessly incorporate KeyVR into our process and it has already made a positive impact.”
How it Works
KeyVR takes any supported KeyShot scene into a truly immersive VR experience, in seconds. With a scene open in KeyShot, users transport into KeyVR with one click to initiate an interactive 3D experience. Using a head mounted display (HMD), such as Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, the entire VR environment can be viewed and examined from all angles in real-time. Users also have the option to interact with multiple design variations, view models in different environments, initiate animations, and enable physics (gravity, collision, and rigid-body physics simulations). Zero-preparation for 3D assets or environment is needed with the only requirement being a scene created in KeyShot, whether it is a newly imported model, a scene saved from KeyShot, or a production-ready scene.
“No Developer. No Scripting. Just the Power of VR in the hands of designers.” – Derek Cicero, VP Products & Strategy, Luxion
KeyVR Advantages
KeyVR is built on the core framework of KeyShot, allowing many of the core application features with a render path built from the ground to provide full frame quality in milliseconds, for the fastest VR experience that allows users to see designs in-context, while being able to move around the model and make adjustments as they would in a real-world studio. KeyVR includes the following advantages:
One-click
KeyVR is the quickest way to view your scene in virtual reality. From KeyShot, hit the VR icon to be transported into KeyVR for a One-Click VR experience.
Fast & Easy
KeyVR performance is unmatched, just like you would expect from the creators of KeyShot. KeyVR is GPU-powered, optimized for VR viewing, and capable of loading large data sets.
Minimal Prep
KeyVR eliminates the complex setup and asset prep required by other solutions. Simply, add materials and lighting as you normally would normally in KeyShot, then open in KeyVR.
No Coding
KeyVR doesn’t require convoluted programming. It doesn’t require outsourcing development, bringing on dedicated VR developers, or forcing conditions for your models to work in VR.
Powerful
KeyVR brings you power in a tool built for designers. It enables a return to the creative process instead of VR development oversight and brings more visualization options to your workflow.
What is Required?
KeyVR has three minimal requirements to start viewing your 3D models in VR:
VR-Ready Windows PC
KeyVR is currently available for all Windows desktops or laptops with a VR-ready GPU (GTX1080, Vega64 or better).
Head Mounted Display
Head mounted display support includes Oculus Rift (with Oculus Desktop) and HTC Vive or Windows Mixed Reality (with SteamVR).
KeyShot File
While KeyVR is a separate product from KeyShot and KeyShot is not required to run KeyVR, KeyVR accepts KeyShot .bip and .ksp files created using KeyShot. Additionally, KeyShot users have the capability to go directly from KeyShot to KeyVR in one-click.
