PhilpottPearce is a creative studio built on a nearly decade-long friendship and a shared passion for design. Drawing on diverse skills, critical thinking, and evolving technology, the studio delivers socially conscious, sustainable work that creates meaningful product experiences.
Founders Alex Philpott and Oscar Pearce met while studying industrial design at Loughborough University and went on to co-found Design Burger, a global platform celebrating the best in industrial design. Through exhibitions in cities including Milan, Shanghai, San Francisco, and London, they have grown an international community of over 230,000 designers and enthusiasts.
What challenges have you faced as a young Studio?
Starting a design studio comes with an immediate contradiction. You need to present a clear point of view from day one, but the body of work that proves it takes time to arrive. In industrial design, that gap is particularly pronounced. Products can take one to two years to reach the market. Much of the process sits behind NDAs or exists as rough prototypes not intended for public view. The outputs that ultimately validate a studio often appear long after the work itself has begun.
That creates a problem early on. You are doing the work, but there is very little to publish. At the same time, clients, collaborators and the wider industry form an impression quickly. A new studio has to establish confidence before its work has had time to fully exist in the world.
How does KeyShot help close the gap?
In the early stages of the studio, we relied on high-fidelity 3D visualization to create work that felt resolved enough to represent us publicly and establish presence early on. This has been particularly important in shaping how the studio exists outwardly. A website, for example, is not just a portfolio of finished products, it is also a representation of intent. In the absence of a long list of realized projects, the quality and coherence of what is shown becomes even more critical.

What role do product renderings play in your projects?
3D visualization is not a substitute for real products, but a way of standing behind ideas with a level of clarity and conviction that matches how we want the studio to be understood. For a young studio, the ability to present an idea in a way that feels considered and complete before it reaches production is invaluable. It allows us to be judged on the quality of our thinking, rather than the timing of our releases.
How do you utilize KeyShot when working with clients?
As the studio has developed, the role of 3D visualization has shifted, but its importance has remained. With client work, the focus is less about establishing presence and more about progressing ideas. Early-stage concepts need to be understood well enough for decisions to be made around them. The level of resolution provided by rendering helps move discussions forward, allowing both sides to align on direction before committing to development.
What has remained consistent is the need for immediacy without compromise. The pace at which a studio needs to operate, particularly in its early years, does not always align with the slower timelines of industrial design. Being able to bring work to a level where it can be stood behind, shared, and acted upon without delay is business critical to us.
