We are back!
« on: July 31, 2010, 06:45:23 am »
Sorry for the delay in responding on the forum. Before I go through the "unread posts since my last visit", I wanted to quickly tell you that we just returned from a great Siggraph 2010 show! We were previewing KeyShot 2.1 with some great new features - I hope you all saw the press announcement. People loved it, and so did we.

Thanks for all of you who stopped by the booth, in particular Speedster aka Bill Gould who did a phenomenal job "selling" wherever he went! I love you, man!

Below is another teaser image that I did to show off the new translucent material, and the bloom effect. The model was built in Z-Brush by Maarten Verhoeven who already provided the jungle scene. Enjoy.

Next week we are off to Portland, OR for the IDSA International Conference. It will be awesome.

All the best,

Thomas

You're most welcome Thomas.  As you know, it's EASY to sell KeyShot!

I will say that seeing your subsurface scattering being demonstrated on a nine-million poly scanned "head", running the (yet to be released) KS2.1, on a 72 cpu "box" the size of a loaf of bread in the INTEL booth was downright scary!  Of course, you don't need that many cpu's to run KS, but it was quite impressive!

There were a number of rendering apps being demonstrated at SIGGRAPH, but none compare to KS.

Thanks, Thomas. I'm more interested in the 3Dconnexion support than anything, but I have some ideas for using the ability to mimic skin, too.

72 cpu box? Sounds like an Intel response to you know who :)

Hi quigley;

Betcha!

72 cpu box?

I wish I had gotten more info on it.  It's really small, connected to your main box with an ethernet cable.  I heard it comes with a basic graphics card that's not needed in KS.  It's probably beyond my budget, but maybe the KS guys at the INTEL booth have more info on it.

We used a renderbox from Boxx with 12 Westmere cores (24 threads). The cost is around $5k
for this machine. It looks quite nice with a polished finish similar to MacBook Pros. At SIGGRAPH we showed KeyShot running with 2 external Boxx machines and a desktop machine with a total of 36 cores (72 with hyperthreading). With this setup we can pretty much scale to any performance that your hardware budget will allow  ;)

Henrik,

Thank you for this long-awaited functionality / extension.
Can we get more information, how it will work?

What are the requirements ?
technical / software/ license...
For example, I have 4 x i7 computer, can I use this?

Ralf,

At the moment it works by installing a KeyShot server on the external machines. You can connect to these from KeyShot itself, and KeyShot will use all the available CPUs. It supports all the same operating systems as KeyShot. Windows, Mac, Linux, and 32/64 bit... Your 4 x i7 computer should work nicely. We are still in the process on deciding the licensing etc. Right now it simply uses a KeyShot license per machine.

Henrik,

Is there already a step forward in this matter?
It is now announced for > 2 years, and in the latest Newsletter - August 2010
I cannot find details.  ???

•   All new translucent material using realtime, interactive subsurface scattering
•   Realtime glow effect utilizing any graphics card
•   Full UNDO stack
•   New and improved importers including support for SolidEdge (PC) and ALIAS (PC & Mac )
•   Improved scene interaction and navigation
•   Improvements to labeling including the ability to add specularity to the label
•   All new final render output mode utilizing realtime settings

Thanks in advance for reliable information in this case.

Ralf

2 years? Can't be ... we have only been around for 8 months  ;)

There are 2 things - offline network rendering and realtime network rendering. We are testing offline network rendering as we speak. Realtime network rendering will take a while to get right.
