Real confusion about Realtime
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:39:03 am »

I have to say I never use the Realtime functions. There is no tutorial that deals with Realtime
exclusively so I have tried to figure it out from the manual but am confused by its use of terms. From the manual:

Your post is incomplete. Please let us know what functions cause confusion.

Looks like my copy and paste did not work. I'll try it again here.

Cut off again. I had the same issue. Try avoiding quotation marks.

I didnt know why my text is not coming through. I copied it to word pad
which should be generic. Let's see if this makes it.

I have to say I never use the Realtime functions. There is no tutorial that deals with Realtime exclusively so I have tried to figure it out from the manual but am confused by its use of terms. From the manual:
The settings in here Realtime let you control the scene, so you can get the perfect picture in Realtime.  It then lists Image Settings affect the overll image including the backplate. Why is it now refering to controlling an image. Is the image something different? These terms need to be defined. Then it lists Realtime Settings  settings affect the Realtime rendering) But we are already in the Realtime tab, so why is there a sub group called Realtime settings?  Then there is Effects settings are Realtime imaging effects Again seems redundant. It seems obvious that all these settings in the Realtime tab affect Realtime so dividing them up into categories of Image, Realtime and Effects and say again they control realtime is redundant and confusing.

The manual said Realtime settings were controlling the scene but go to Environment in the manual and you find:

Gamma: Controls the intensity of the light in the scene.

Brightness: Controls the amount of light in the scene.

It already said Realtime setting control the scene so why have another setting in another place doing the same thing.
Since Environment settings change what is on screen doesn

It still cut some text off. Looks like its best not to cut and paste into the forum posts. Maybe this last bit will make it.

I agree that there needs to be a bit of cleanup in the realtime tab. This is planned for v3.

I actually refer to it as "Image tab", since it affects the image as a whole. In realtime, of course.

There is no redundancy in settings. Brightness and Gamma in the Realtime Tab affects the overall image, while Brightness and Gamma in the Environment only affect the HDRI.

These days I only work with the overall image brightness and gamma, rather than the the HDRI itself.

I hope this helps.

I can see there is no actual redundancy but I think you can understand how it could appear that way especially to the new user. If your environment is set to not show as mine is both the environment and realtime gamma and brightness seem to do the same thing. They both change the appearance of your model as you watch in realtime. I think calling it the image tab is better and describing the distinction between image and scene setting functions would help too. I look forward to V3.
