Title: Threadripper 2 - 457fps
Post by: guest85409 on August 15, 2018, 06:44:13 pm
Put together our new TR2 machine today and had to run the KS benchmark right away!  Needed to do a bios update for the motherboard to post due to the new processor, otherwise setup went smoothly.

Will be running some comparison renders against our 112 core xeon rig, 360 core farms and 128 core TR1 farm.  With the TR1 farm we will try limiting it to 64 cores to compare apples to apples.

Getting close to that 506 FPS. Wonder if you can get that number with a small over clock.

what was the total cost?

Right around $5300, but that's with a Quadro P4000 gpu.

Just for comparison, that's the numbers I'm getting with our new HP Z8 32c/64t machine. That machine was $9000 and we just killed the motherboard last thursday. Fortunalty there's an HP repair center near by and they were out and replaced it within 2 days.

These high performance machines just makes me question their ability to run 100% for long periods of time. WIll be interesting to see how the TR2's fare.

I can say that the threadripper machines (both 1 and 2) run much cooler than our HP z840 88 core machines.  When rendering the HP machines get quite warm.  Granted the HP's are dual processor and air cooled versus the water cooled AMD's.

Just ordered my components today for a new  'budget' TR2 machine.  Cost was $2900 not including graphics card and OS (had a Quadro P2000 from another machine and our IT buys the OS).  I probably could have saved a bit more on the RAM, secondary HDD, and case, but think it will offer a very good 'bang for the buck'.  I could have also dropped to 800W PS but might put a higher end Quadro card in it in the future and plan on some overclocking so went with 1000W to be sure I had enough juice to run it once it's all tweaked.

Will post results when I get KS going on it, but expect it to be in the mid-400's fps.

Got the TR2 running today. Not overclocked yet. KS v8 FPS is in the high 400's (averaging around 470).  I will try KS7 in a bit to see if it's any slower.

Hello

I also just finished my Threadripper Gen 2 rig yesterday and did a benchmark with no optimization/overklocking other than UEFI BIOS optimization on Auto.

Asus ROG Strix x399-E
AMD Threadripper 2950x
32gb - Corsair DDR4 Quad Channel 3000mhz
500mb Samsung 970 m.2
NZXT AIO x62 cooling

FPF is at 305

Are you running manual optimization?

Hi Peter. Although I'm not sure, I think the other workstations mentioned here runs the threadripper 2990wx.
Perhaps you are aware and just asking for general optimisation tips :) - Please ignore this if that's the case.

The 2950x has only half the CPU cores as the 2990wx and a little higher clock rate, so 300fps is about where it should be.

Got it. Missed that it was the 2990wx. However, looking at other results, 300 puts it in parity with the 1950 buildsx, which makes sense as they have the same cores and threads running at 3500. I will do some experiments with higher core speeds.

Thanks, and impressive results!

FYI v7 was somewhat slower at around 430fps on my build.

Is that v8?  Any info you can share on the specs are appreciated, particularly on the cooling used and what temps you are seeing during rendering.

Sure...

CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX, 32x 4.2GHz, 80MB Cache, 250W TDP
MBO: ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme, AMD X399, So. TR4
RAM: 64GB, 4x 16GB DDR4-2666 CL15, Corsair Dominator Platinum, Rev S
SSD: 1TB Samsung 970 Pro, M.2 PCIe (MZ-V7P1T0BW)
FAN: Noctua NH-U12S TR4-SP3

During the benchmark today (KS v8), up to 520 FPS at 65-67 °C.

Hope it is helpful.

Hi Eugen,

Would you be able to provide the fps rate for the 'Bathroom Interior' scene from our Downloads (https://www.keyshot.com/resources/downloads/scenes/) page?
Click here (https://www.keyshot.com/?ddownload=332520) to download the scene directly.

The scene should open with the following settings:

I am curious to know the result.

Hi Dries,

The Threadripper starts at 28 FPS it drops slowly to stable 26.2 FPS after 200 samples.

Very interesting...

The TR 2990WX gear beats our Dual Xeon E5-2690 v4 on the camera scene by almost 90 FPS.
Dual Xeon - 430 FPS
Thradripper - 520 FPS

On the other side the Xeon machine beats the TR on the interior scene by 1.7 FPS, starting by over 31 FPS and dropping slowly to stable 27.9 FPS.
Dual Xeon - 27.9 FPS
Threadripper - 26.2 FPS

What can we learn from that? :D

Hi Eugen,

Thanks a lot for this. Very much appreciated.
We can learn that this affirms some reports we have seen on strange performance scaling with TR 2990WX. This is not limited to KeyShot though. Some other highly parallel tools show similar behavior. It appears to be specific to Windows.
We are looking into this.

Hi Eugen,

For giggles (but seriously), could you try the same? Setting Processor affinity so that 'CPU 1' is unchecked?
It would be interesting to see how that impacts the fps rate for the camera and bathroom scene.

Hey Dries,

Camera - 510 FPS
Bathroom - 27.3 FPS

You can have remote access to the system to play around (if it helps). I don't need it at the moment. Mail me for that.

I think this will suffice for now. It's good to have the measurements.

Wondering if the memory bandwidth issue has anything to do with it?

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3298859/components-processors/how-memory-bandwidth-is-killing-amds-32-core-threadripper-performance.html

I saw this a while back when I was looking into building a TR rig at home. Decided to let others do the testing. Watching these thread ripper threads, closely ;)

For me, there is no issue at all. :) The TR system performance is great, compared to the price tag. It performs on the same level and in some cases even better then my double priced Xeon build. At least if it comes to rendering in KS or Cycles. It’s just a rendering beast.
Can’t tell much about encoding and compression tasks,I don’t have many of them. But the difference is noticable - the Xeon build performs better here.

The TR looses against my Xeon machine in interior mode. If you do a lot of  interior mode related projects in KS, wait for more information from Luxion first. Product mode shows better performance.
I’ll test some more heavy scenes next week and will post the results.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone toyed with new Ryzen Master DLM feature for KeyShot and does it improve the interior mode rendering. regards

No. We dropped KS from our main pipeline and didn't investigate it further. Sorry.

Does vray suffer at all? Why does interior mode suffer? What is it doing that product mode does not? I thought a cpu cycle is a cpu cycle but I guess not.
