Title: Random Renderings (+ An apple a day)
Post by: Esben Oxholm on April 28, 2016, 07:37:34 am
Now and then I do some renderings for the sake of practice or just to try some stuff out.
Figured that I might as well show them here :)

Best,

Looking not only at this, but all your renderings in general, i am absolutely amazed by the quality of all your ground planes. All the detail and effort that you put there really end up in fantastic images. Great job.

One day, I hope I will be able to knitpick on something, but alas, it is not today.

Anyway, that's my awkward way of complimenting your work. Never a flaw. Loving it! (especially the cutlery)

Thank you guys!
Hope you slept alright, Chad ;)

Blur is from KeyShot. I always use KeyShot for that. I think that the extra rendering time is worth the quality. I've never managed to create a heavy blur like this in post that was also looking as good as this. Only, if the time schedule is very tight or I onlu need a very subtle DoF blur I do it in post.

Thanks, Will and Josh!

A few small animation projects I've been doing lately. Click to play.

Animation done with dynamic simulation in modo. I keyframe animated a 4 frame long spin and then the dynamic system took care of the rest. Animation exported to KeyShot as .fbx:
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2388699/insta1.png) (https://www.instagram.com/p/BFUhXKqr4Uf/)

Model from Dimensiva. Keyframe animated in modo. Exported to KeyShot as .fbx:
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2388699/insta2.png) (https://www.instagram.com/p/BFj_23jL4Zv/)

Did 3D camera tracking of the footage in After Effects. Exported the tracked camera data to modo where I created the cube geometry. From modo the geometry and camera-movement was exported to KeyShot as .abc (the geometry got invisible when using .fbx. Only outlined showed). Then outputted as single frames as .png with transparency and overlaid on the original footage back in AE:

Pen's my favourite - one crit on the spinning coin is it appears that it's embedding itself in the floor at the end of the anim

Other than that, great stuff :)

Just my two cents >
really cool in C4D (R17) to create dynamic animation and use native export Alembic menu and import the .abc in keyshot
Just a raw example:
Coins on ice : http://jeanphi2.pagesperso-orange.fr/untitled.66.mp4

2 min in C4D
10 min to texture and render animation

Awesome, fun stuff Esben. I'm not familiar with the process for the last one, but how are you matching things up?

Thanks buddy. Yeah, I guess it is embedding itself just a tiny bit... and the reflective surfaces makes it look more prominent. Thanks for pointing out. I gotta be more careful next time :)

Hi Finema. Sounds like the same process as modo. Can't get the video to play, though :(

Awesome, fun stuff Esben. I'm not familiar with the process for the last one, but how are you matching things up?
Thanks Josh. The process is like this:
1. Film footage
2. Track footage camera movement inside AE and create a 3D camera that matches that movement (using the camera tracker function)
3. Export that camera movement to modo via a .json file
4. Create and animate geometry inside modo
5. Export geometry, animation and camera to KeyShot via a .fbx file
6. Do lighting and materials inside KeyShot
7. Export animation as .png single frames with alpha
8. Import frames into AE and overlay the exported .png sequence.

I think I'll do a tutorial on the process when I've done a few more experiments.
Here's another one done the same way as described above:

No problem. It is also quite a treat to explore. I never thought of using KeyShot this way before :)

Here's a couple of new experiments. These are not ment to be pixel perfect, but rather serves to get the process of motion tracking, rotoscoping and combining 3D-animation and footage under the skin. Let me know if you have any questions.

Well, you keep surprising me with the complexity of your materials. It blows my mind.
Thanks, I guess :) I'm not actively striving for complexity, but always seem to end up with something like this. It might be possible to do in a simpler way.

Anyway, here's another one. The idea was to have the figure as a simple translucent material, but as I played around in the material graph I got the idea of a worn painted glass material and had to try it out. Let me know what you think.
Model from threedscans.com.

Both of these are really awesome Esben, but that's a given of course.

I had to study the last one a bit, as I was struggling a wee bit with the damaged paint, as it seemed like there was no underlying material within the damaged area, leaving an infinitely thin shell miraculously standing upright. However, I see now that you have this red-ish material beneath:) It might benefit with slightly less translucent underlying material(?) Not sure if you see my point though.

Hmm... sounds a bit weird. Is KeyShot 6.2 files not backwards compatible with KS 6.1?

Despot, NM-92, Joe, Magnus and Chad: Thank you so much! Much appreciated.

Today I experimented with creating my own image pins.
They are made from a compact fluorescent tube in an old white reflector.
I did 7 brackets for the HDRI ranging from -3 EV to 3 EV.

If you like, you can go to https://gumroad.com/esbenoxholm and download the pins for free and have fun with them.
Please, give me any feedback you have on the use of them. Might do more in the future and would be happy to improve them.

these shots prove that minimal shots can be really awesome and there is no need to make your scene with a lot of different geometries!

Thank you so much, all! Very much appreciated!

Here are two shots I did the other day.
Wanted to create two different looks using the same model and materials. Model from GrabCad.

I feel I am repeating myself in this thread, but you so deserve a +1 for every image you post here. I just wanted to point that out. That building and the headphones are fantastic. Another +1 (=+2) for the minimalism and softness you got going on lately. Looks so great.

I'm with Eric, loving the contra warm/cool one, digging the subtle light hits you've got going on as well :)

I, like Magnus, also feels like repeating myself with yet another huge 'thank you' for commenting. It is, as mentioned before, much appreciated.
Please let me know if you've got any critics/questions.

Here's a new one. My first serious attempt at a car studio shot. Model from grabcad: https://grabcad.com/library/crk-electra-mk-x
I could really use some feedback on the lighting. Spend a lot of time shifting pins around, but really never got satisfied. I couldn't find any obvious places to put down the sharp reflections on this one. Let me know what you would have done :)

Hello Esben. Looks great ! Specially the lights. My best results in automotive rendering were achieved with area lights in an enclosed modeled box studio. Depending on how you manage the intensity and position of the lights you'll get sharp reflections. I have a modeled studio that i used for my previows renders if you'd like to try. Let me know and i'll upload the .ksp or .obj.

Cheers !

The car looks cool, Esben.
My only gripe would be that it looks a bit flat on the front. I think you are loosing a bit of shape definition, due to a slight lack of contrast. It seems like the front faces almost blend into the side.

Also, I do think this would look cool with some sharp specular reflections. :)

Sure, I would like to try that! Thanks. It is also possible to get sharp reflections with the HDRI, but it might be easier with the planes. Any suggestion on where to place the sharp lines on this model? I tried to place one along the side, but I'm not sure it's working.

Thanks, mate! I hear you. Any ideas where to place the sharp lines? I tried to add one along the side but I'm not sure it's optimal.

Here it goes. I've split the surfaces for you, so all the walls can function as lights if you wish or be textured individually. Ceiling has some insets where lights can be applied too. I normally use this with an all black HDRI, and sometimes i add a backdrop ramp inside as well. I usually duplicate some of the planes if i need to highlight any specific spot. Hope it helps !

Yes good point on that Eric, love the specs of 'dust'.

Esben, what is your usual process for adding that detail, is it post? is it a label with an opacity channel tied to the camera perspective?
Maybe you've shared this somewhere else, apologies if this question is redundant.

In the past I've added it in post, but I've recently started to do it directly inside KeyShot by layering materials and using a dust 'overlay' texture as an opacity map. I did a short tutorial yesterday on this proces. Check it out here:

Title: Re: Random Renderings

I've been doing it this way too and i am pretty happy with the results. Playing with the brightness/contrast of the opacity map gives you control over the visibility of the dust to achieve different effects.

True. I totally forgot that part. I gotta have a basic script next to me next time I'm doing a tutorial :)
Actually, I usually use the 'color to number'-node instead of adjusting brightness/contrast as I find it easier to control.

Simple, clean, elegant, and beautiful, Esben! Love the lighting (Area lights(s)?) and texturing. Really dig that backdrop ramp texture :)

Cheers,
Eric

Nope, just HDRI with two image pins. One resembling a warm umbrella flash and one resembling a window :)

Your Photoshop game is strong. I wish I had your eye when it comes to pushing the image that last 10%. Great image.

Yeah, the model comes UV-mapped with the bitmap texture included, so most of the credits for that goes to the creator (dimensiva.com).

Thanks, Will! Probably comes from a few years back when I needed a break from doing renderings and spend a lot of time instead digging in to photography retouching.

Hi peeps,

Had some fun yesterday creating a quick interior scene.
Models from Dimensiva.com and textures from poliigon.com
Lit by two area lights, HDRI at 0, interior rendering mode, post processing in photoshop.

I love the out of focus elements that you use in these kind of images. You also used this in the Beolab scene and it looks great. It adds a lot of depth to the image.

:) Awesome look, great composition and of course, superb simple lighting.

Question about the HDRI @ 0; is this any different than having an ALL BLACK HDR?
Just curious.

Thanks!

Should give the exact same result :)

Had some fun altering the lights on this scene to create the feeling of day, night and dawn.
Now, on to something new.

I like the night scene the best. The first one you did that was very blue... I didn't want to sound like a jerk, but I think the sharpening (assuming that's what it is) was too aggressive causing white outlines around everything which was distracting. These last two are really great!

You don't sound like a jerk! That is exactly the kind of feedback that I like to get. I see it now as well. The sharpening is bad, especially around the table legs. Went too quick over that. Thanks.

Just saw the animation and it blew my mind. I've already saw it in other of your animations, but you can capture the tiny subtle details of movement to make it look awesome (like the vibration of the clock hand). Bravo for this one man.

New small project for fun.
Dropping a cookie.

Cookie is a 3d scan from blankrepository.com and the milk was modelled using the splash kit for modo.
All rendered in KeyShot.

Cheers,

Thanks, Nico. I was actually about to create a mug, but then thought that no one drinks cold milk from a cup, and went with the glass to stay true to the context :)

Have been really busy lately, but wanted to show a few experimental projects done for fun and practice.
Everything is modelled in modo, except for the banan which is a 3d-scan from blank repository.

Thanks for looking,
