How is KeyShot used in the design process at RiotPWR?

With a team based around the world in China, USA, and UK, RiotPWR needed a way to quickly see the benefits and flaws of a certain design change without having to all be in the same room. KeyShot was an integral part of making this happen.

“KeyShot is used at almost every stage of product development, Joshua Munro explains. “Starting from early product mock ups all the way through to final product shots and packaging. We use KeyShot for the majority of our marketing purposes and product shots as well. We find that the resolution offered for product rendering far surpasses that of photography. It means we can scale up to large format really easily for posters and in store displays.”

With limited edition versions of their products in high demand, the team is also able to create mock-ups to send out to different companies to help them visualize how it will look with sticker overlays and various color combinations. Along with product images, they also use KeyShot to mock-up in-store displays, fine tuning packaging, and create animations to showcase new product features.

When it comes to other benefits, Joshua says, “KeyShot has helped us save time and money with the creation of photorealistic design mock-ups even before they’re sent out for the manufacturing of plastic molding samples. This is one of the biggest benefits we gain with KeyShot.”

When it comes to using KeyShot, the team has three tips to pass along. They reinforce that KeyShot is intuitive and easy to learn but can be overwhelming with the amount of features it offers, so just start with the basics. They recommend to:

  1. Find your perfect camera angle (and save this so you can make sure its locked in so you can have cohesive images if you want to experiment with color variations).
  2. Really get to know how the materials work and catch the light. Even changing the roughness of a material slightly can give it a completely different look.
  3. Lighting is the most impressive part of KeyShot and really changes how your product looks. The presets are fantastic and you can always experiment with changing the settings for these as you get more confident.
